The OE tensioner works with a combination of internal spring pressure and engine oil pressure to keep the timing chain tight, although at low oil pressures it can allow the standard exhaust camshaft to close too aggressively. The problem is exacerbated with long duration cams or stiffer valve springs.

So the Pro Series tensioner makes up for this with its larger 16mm diameter piston and larger ratcheting mechanism with deeper, wider hardened steel ratchet teeth for added peac of mind. Factory oil ways and passages remain, meaning it works just as Honda intended, only better!
