A special line-off ceremony in mid-March at Subaru's main Gunma factory in marked the start of official production of the Subaru BRZ.
The Gunma Main Plant has been extensively refitted to cope with the anticipated demand once both the BRZ and Toyota GT 86 hit the world markets in a matter of weeks.
The collaboration between Toyota and Subaru is so close that the Subaru site will be producing both models on the same line, bringing to fruition seven years of alliance between the two companies.

The Toyota GT 86, due to land in the UK in June, finally has a price: £24,995.
That's the entry, on-the-road price for the highly anticipated sports coupe, with further details about the UK model variants still to come.
Over in Japan, Toyota will offer the 86 in 'G', 'GT' and 'GT Limited' grades for the majority of consumers, although our focus is grabbed by the poverty-spec 'RC' model, which gets unpainted bumpers and door handles, 16” steel wheels and a stripped-down interior spec for a Yen equivalent of about £16k.
The basic specification makes it the ideal model for racers and tuners, and Subaru will offer a similar 'RA' version of the BRZ in Japan as well.
Don't expect to see them in the UK, though – the strength of the yen combined with import duty and tax would see the £16k RC cost nearer £24k by the time it was on the road, meaning you may as well buy a higher-equipped UK car for that bit extra.

TIME FOR A CHANGE?

As if being the world's smallest four seater isn't individual enough, Toyota is now offering the iQ with a choice of six different customising graphics packages.
With eight external paint colours, six leather combinations and six roof and body decals, there are literally hundreds of combinations that can be specified at the time of ordering a new iQ, costing £200 for the side decals, £180 for the roof decals and £775 for the leather interior.
If it encourages more people to embrace the personalisation of their motor, then that's no bad thing!
For more details, see www.toyota.co.uk or pop into your local dealership.

You might have seen the pictures already (that's what production schedules do to us!) but if not, behold the concept for the new NSX.
Unveiled at the Detroit Motor Show by Acura, Honda's US luxury brand, the new NSX will employ a lightweight chassis and is to be powered by a mid-mounted next-gen VTEC V6 engine and Sport Hybrid AWD (SH-AWD) electric drive system.
A replacement for the NSX has been sorely needed for several years, so it'll be great to see the return of the Japanese supercar in 2014.
That said, it won't be as Japanese as the original – Acura announced that the new NSX will be built in Ohio. Whodda thunk it?

The Aygo's been with us since 2005, and it's taken until 2012 for Toyota's urban star to get a significant overhaul – a testament to the success of the original design if ever there was one.
Time moves on, though, so for 2012, Toyota has given its fun small car a new look, better economy and ensured it's still cheap as chips to run.
The visual changes are in line with Toyota's new design language, while mechanically the power and torque figures remain the same but economy improves to 65.7mpg (manual).
The updated Aygo goes on sale in March, with all the details at www.toyota.co.uk.

We really liked the CR-Z Mugen that we tested back in issue 118, but the question remained if there would be a market for a limited edition collaboration between Honda UK and Mugen Euro.
The answer is the CR-Z iCF, a new 175bhp model that will slot into the hybrid line-up and could cost as little as £24k (only £3k more than the CR-Z GT's OTR price).
Mugen Euro's input comes in the form of its 'iCF' system (supercharger, induction system and remapped ECU) as fitted to the CR-Z Mugen, here making almost 50% more power than the standard car and slashing three seconds from its 0-62mph time.
Don't get carried away by the picture though – the Mugen wheels and body kit are optional extras that would add more than £7k to the retail price.
The CR-Z iCF will be available for test-drives at the eight Honda UK Mugen dealers in the spring.

January sees the introduction of two fresh Suzuki models – the all-new Swift Sport and the D-segment Kizashi.
While the Swift Sport is bound to be covered by all manner of tuning and aftermarket upgrades in no time, it's good to know that the 2.4-litre, four-wheel drive Kizashi isn't going to be left out – Eibach has already developed a Pro-Kit lowering spring set for the new car, priced at £157.
The smartly-styled Kizashi is keenly priced at a fiver under £22k and comes with an impressive standard specification, so head to your nearest Suzuki dealer to check it out in the metal.

While all eyes turned to Tokyo for the Subaru BRZ's global unveiling, Subaru's performance brand STI got in early at the LA Auto Show with its impression of how an STI version of the coupe might look.
While it is only a concept, the mixture that iconic WR paint (a new version called WR Blue Pearl II), flared arches, prominent aero additions at either end and lightweight 18” STI alloys is tantalising to say the least.
There's clearly an appetite for an STI model, so all we can hope is that Subaru doesn't make us wait too long for it. Oh, and can it be turbocharged too, please?

As if the GT-R wasn't brilliant enough already, Nissan has found ways to improve it for the 2012 model year.
Power and torque both rise by 20 points, peaking at 550ps and 632Nm respectively (542bhp and 466lb/ft in old money), while economy is up to 24mpg. Improvements have been made in body reinforcement and the gearshift, but the most impressive example to slavish devotion to excellence is the fact that RHD models of the GT-R have an asymmetric suspension set up to account for the extra weight of the driver – clever, eh?
Nissan also announced that a more track-focused GT-R will be added to the line-up for 2012, which is great news for the more committed driver.

Like the sound of a Focus RS-beating Mazda? Brackley-based tuner BBR has followed up on its successful MX-5 Anniversary turbocharger conversions with a range of engine and suspension upgrades for the MPS models of the Mazda3 and Mazda6.
For the engine upgrades, BBR offers three phases, stepping up in 30bhp increments from 290bhp to a monster 350bhp from the 2.3 DSI turbo engine.
Starting from only £714, they're definitely worth a look. Alongside the engine upgrades, a range of BBR chassis upgrades is available, starting with performance springs and topping out with custom BBR-spec Koni adjustable dampers.
For more details of the conversions, contact BBR GTi on 01280 700700 or pick up the next issue of Banzai where we'll be test-driving the Mazda3 MPS phase two upgrade.

JUKE-R IN THE PACK

This has to be one of the most interesting concept projects for several years – Nissan's Juke-R super-crossover.
Simply put, it involves packaging a GT-R's 3.8-litre V6 and transaxle powertrain underneath the bodyshell of a Juke to create a road-legal concept.
The project has been designed by Nissan and is being built by leading motorsport firm RML with input from Nissan Technology Centre for Europe.
The gauges, dials and LCD display of the GT-R's interior have been incorporated into the Juke's interior, along with a FIA-spec roll cage and twin bucket seats.
Nissan and RML have a history of coming up with radical concept mash ups – the duo formerly cooked up the Micra 350SR, a K12 Micra with a 350Z's VQ35DE mounted amidships.
Only two Juke-Rs will be built – one RHD and one LHD – but if you want to see how the concept has been put together, check out the build videos we've uploaded on the styling and ergonomics.

Mazda will unveil its latest concept car at the Tokyo Motor Show at the end of November, making this our first look at the likely successor to the current Mazda6.
Called the Takeri, the concept draws on Mazda's kodo (ital) design language to create a bold and stylish mid-size saloon car.
The beauty isn't only skin-deep on Takeri, though, as the concept will include Mazda's SKYACTIV-D engine, i-STOP technology and lightweight chassis tech.
Coupled with that will be Mazda's first regenerative braking system that takes kinetic energy during deceleration and converts it to electricity to power the car's electrical systems.
We think Takeri looks great – what do you think?

Lexus' limited edition LFA Nürburgring has fittingly set a new lap record for its production class around the famous Nordschleife circuit.
Piloted by Lfa race and test driver Akira Iida, the track-focused variant of the Lexus supercar completed the lap in seven minutes 14.464sec, putting it ahead of the Porsche 911 GT2's claimed time of 7:18, and nearly ten seconds faster than the best time for a GT-R.
The record-setting LFA was equipped with the production-spec Nurburgring Edition upgrades and still running the same Bridgestone RE070 tyres as fitted to all productions LFAs.

UP AND COMING

With just days to the 64th Frankfurt Motor Show, Subaru is preparing to take the wraps off two new concept cars.
Most anticipated is the boxer-engined, rear-wheel drive sports car concept jointly developed with Toyota.
Subaru is bringing along a refined version of the 'Sports Car Architecture' that it showed at Geneva but is keeping tight-lipped about further details except to reveal that the model will be called the BRZ when it goes into production in spring 2012.
Subaru will also show a production version of its XV crossover, which is expected to bear close relation to the XV Concept (pictured) shown at Shanghai.
Also debuting at the show is the new generation of Suzuki Swift Sport, the new ninth generation Honda Civic hatchback, and Toyota is unveiling a production version of the 128.4mpg Prius Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV)

COOKING UP A STORM

If you're looking for a no-frills Jap-powered sports car, there's more choice out there than you might think.
This is the SDR V-Storm, an exoskeletal, mid-engined, rear-wheel drive sports car, powered by a turbocharged Subaru flat-four. Available from Scoobybits (01872 561687 or www.scoobybits.co.uk), the southern SDR dealer and build agent, the V-Storm can be supplied in kit form or as a turnkey package.
With the well-known tuning potential of the Scooby boxer engine combined with a huge array of options to personalise the V-Storm, it's easy to see why it’s been winning awards.
A self-build package will cost in the region of £14k, while a turnkey V-Storm comes in at £21,995. Nice little project, we reckon!
